Mental health needs serious attention

Health is an important part of life. It is also believed that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body, that is why most people worry about their health and also take regular medical advice. This concern and awareness of people towards health is mainly seen towards physical health, but it is equally important to pay attention to mental health as well.

Awareness about mental health is essential

Our society is not yet aware of mental health. This is the reason that from the person working around us to every other person walking on the road, everyone is mentally ill and we are unable to identify them. In our society, mental health has been seen and understood only as madness, that is why the person himself and even the family are unable to understand that he is mentally ill and needs treatment.

AdvertisementWhereas mental health is not madness but the domination of our extreme feelings, emotions and unfulfilled desires in the form of mental disorders. This brings a person to situations of murder and suicide and we keep wondering how a normal looking person committed suicide? These situations arise due to mental imbalance of feelings. Situations of mental imbalance are increasing more due to lack of communication.

The competition to look better and to appear even better has made us more self-centred. Due to this tendency of being self-centred, man creates a pretentious world around him and starts living with two faces. One which is seen by the family and society and the other is his inner mind which is struggling with itself.

Today, the changing meanings of struggles in life have also changed the struggling life of man.Earlier, even if not much, the child lived an independent and stress-free life till a certain age. There used to be less social, educational and family pressure on him.

Or we can say that the family used to take care of the mental health of the child. In difficult situations and situations of failure, the child used to free himself from mental pressure with the help of the family. At present, general situations, relations, family structure and humans, everything has changed.

Loneliness, competition and fear of failure are becoming the terror of life.

Society struggling with mental conflict

Social and economic pressure has filled the children with the feeling of being good, very good and the best as soon as they are born. They live with this feeling throughout their life and pass it on to their next generation. We are being born in a society full of mental pressures where there are circles of immense tensions and pressures around us.

From childhood, the family and society teach us to enter these circles but forget to teach us to get out of these circles. They doteach us how to achieve success but do not teach us how to make ourselves mentally strong in case of failure. Today, every person around us can be seen struggling with mental conflict, sometimes fighting with himself and sometimes fighting with others. They need treatment i.e. counseling and most of all communication.

The mentality of not being able to make anyone aware of one’s mental condition is giving rise to most mental health problems. The mentality of not considering mental health as our illness is also increasing the incidents of suicide. Just as we are aware of physical health and keep getting it inspected and tested from time to time, similarly mental health should also be taken care of.

Western countries have taken this problem seriously, which is why almost every person in these countries has his own counsellor. But in India, there is still a lack of mentality to see mental health as a problem. Today, the worry of employment among the youth has distanced them from their families.

Loneliness, competition and fear of failure are becoming the terror of their lives. In such a situation, it is necessary that employed people should be given proper time to spend with their families so that they can share their mental conflict with their loved ones and call out the negative attitude arising in their minds and save themselves from being dominated by negativity. Otherwise, in the situation of increasing mental ill health among the youth, a step like suicide will not be beneficial for us, society, nation.

Meet Manicka

I created The Social Work Success Path blog and podcast, during the pandemic of 2021 to provide online education and mentorship for Social Workers. I felt very isolated and disconnected being only in the second year of running my private practice. I strongly considered going back to work when everything shut down. The resources and tools that I share helped me to maintain my practice through the pandemic and plan a successful transition as a Social Work content creator, doing work that I love and connecting with Social Workers all around the world. I did this in the span of 1 year, but using the resources, trainings and tools that I have pulled together, and all my all lessons learned, you can make your career transition much sooner than I did!
